At Weybridge Orthodontics, we offer lingual braces as one of our teeth straightening options. These are fixed to the backs of the teeth so that they cannot be seen during treatment. One of the popular options that we work with is Incognito in Weybridge.
Incognito offers many patients the discreet solution they have been looking for. However, a bit of research on the internet shows that there are some common concerns regarding lingual braces. These are:
Longer treatment time
It is true that the price for completely invisible braces is often a longer treatment time. This is because the application of pressure through the backs of the teeth is slightly lighter. Treatment times vary between 18-36 months. Patients tend to be less worried about the length of time though because the look of their smile is not affected. Also, it can feel like a gentler treatment with less discomfort than with standard braces due to the lighter pressure.
Interference with the tongue
As with any braces, it can take time to get used to the feel of new equipment in your mouth. Lingual braces, like Incognito in Weybridge, tend to affect the tongue at first. Some people experience a little soreness. If this is the case for you, we can offer you some dental wax to put over your braces, which will protect the tongue until you get used to avoiding the area. For the same reason, some people notice a slight change in their speech when they have lingual braces. This should fade once you get used to the presence of your braces. On the plus side, the insides of your cheeks are unaffected by Incognito in Weybridge and they do not interfere with any activities like contact sports or playing an instrument.
Difficulty cleaning
All braces make oral hygiene more of a challenge. Suddenly you have new nooks and crannies to get to as well as many more places where food can get stuck. All you need to cope with this is a full complement of dental equipment including floss, mouthwash and interdental brushes. You then just need to allow yourself enough time to thoroughly clean your braces a few times a day.
